The news reported yesterday or the day before that an experimental ultralight
plane (they obviously don't know that there is a difference) crashed in north
GA. There were no details beyond this. Anyone have more to add?

Probably a Stits Playboy, from the identification.

An ultralight crashed in western suburbs of Atlanta in Paulding County on
Saturday. There were two souls on board. One perished. They departed from a
private grass strip. Speculation is that they stalled on departure while
trying to avoid trees. They were very likely over gross weight.

It was a Fergeson "Fergy II" . Tha Father was killed, the son is hanging on.
They were departing the designer's 650' strip and had a classic stall-spin.
Some wittnesses said the engine was to blame, others said the opposite. He
bobbled a couple of times before the stall and spin.

Per FAR 103, no passengers. There are a number of ultralight-like
AC, usually also over the FAR 103 weight limit, that are considered
to be 'ultralight trainers'. E.G. Challenger II. Most likely they
are most often used, not for taining, but to carry passengers.

Does it matter now to the dead man and his family? The FAA called it an
ultralight, but in the end, who cares? Somebody is gone and will never come
back.

I offer my condolences to any of his friends on the group. I know the
ultralight/sport plane community in our area is very tight. There are many
pilots mourning this loss.
